five friday finds: sound check, parents dating, data poisoning

would you want to live forever?

Howdy folks

Festivals mark seasons in Singapore, not the weather. So I'm kinda digging how the island is getting more into Halloween every year. Here are the finds for the week:

  1. SOUND CHECK AI can spot type 2 diabetes in someone, based on just a few seconds of them talking.
  2. AFTERLIFE These companies could use your data to bring you back—without your consent. Creeeppyyyy.
  3. AGE IRRELEVANT Enthusiastic, knowledgeable, daring, wise – it’s common to make assumptions about people depending on their age. But does one group have it best when it comes to creative work?
  4. PARENT ANXIETY Desperate Chinese parents are joining dating apps to marry off their adult children.
  5. DATA POISONING A new tool, called Nightshade, messes up training data in ways that could cause serious damage to image-generating AI models.

'Tis the season of spookiness! I might be bold enough to watch a horror movie alone this weekend, or pick up a Stephen King classic - but that might be way scarier.
