five friday finds: prisons, print, poets

In 2024, maybe get a physical newspaper subscription

Howdy,

Sending the last FFF for the year (be back in Jan), I thought about how chaotic this year was on many fronts - this week's finds gave me new ways to frame the world in the new year:

  1. EMBRACE & BRACE 'Uncertainty' became a daily reminder post-pandemic. Learning how to deal with it is going to be a forever skill.
  2. PRISON STREAM How streaming shapes the collective imagination is going to be something we discuss a lot more with over the next few years.
  3. PRINT IS IN As a person who still gets a printed newspaper, buys printed magazines and reads printed books, I feel validated and I encourage you to join the bandwagon.
  4. LOVE NEWS The financial incentive for doom scrolling is at an all-time high. Breaking that cycle is going to require some love.
  5. POETS MATTER Training data companies are grabbing writers of fiction, drama, poetry, and also general humanities experts to improve AI creative writing.

I am a big fan of markers of time - new years, equinoxes and solstices are all a way to breathe, reassess and press reset. Make the most of it. See y'all in 2024!
