Five Friday Finds: hopepunk, ears, wet bulbs

weekly curiosities for your mind

Hello hello folks.

I’ve been sending out this newsletter to hundreds of people across Google for the past 6 years. It’s usually what I found interesting that week at the intersection of culture and tech. This week on, I’ll be reposting it for the wider world.

I'm mentally bankrupt after this week at work, but these finds kept me going:

  1. HOPEPUNK In these times of cynicism and despair, is 'hopepunk' the perfect antidote?
  2. YEAR OF EARS A London-based photographer turns his focus onto lobes and earholes.
  3. WET BULB Next time you find yourself in a conversation about extreme heat, try inserting the following line to mix things up: “Yeah, but have you heard about the wet bulb?”
  4. AI x WILDLIFE Technology proves able to identify dozens of species in thousands of hours of recordings.
  5. UNWANTED EVs A subsidy-fueled boom helped build China into an electric-car giant but left weed-infested lots across the nation brimming with unwanted battery-powered vehicles.

I'm all for drowning out the world with TV and unhealthy food this weekend.
