five friday finds: dung space, streaks, blackboards

why do we still love chalk?

Hey folks,

Incessant rain the past few days in Singapore means I’ve been largely indoors, and these finds have kept me company:

  1. DUNG IN SPACE Japanese space flight company Interstellar Technologies hopes to put satellites in orbit using rockets fuelled by a source that’s cheap and plentiful in the country: cow dung.
  2. WIZARD OF AI Alan Warburton was commissioned by the Open Data Institute to bring us 'The Wizard of AI,' a 20-minute video essay about the cultural impacts of generative AI.
  3. STREAKS GALORE How keeping the ‘streak’ is changing people’s behavior. Maintaining a streak is a major motivator, and apps have caught on.
  4. BLACKBOARDS FTW Why scientists can’t quit chalk, even in the digital age.
  5. HUNONG Chinese netizens have mastered the art of slacking to survive in an increasingly stressful society.

I taught my daughter not to complain about the weather, and when I did exactly that in front of her - the retribution was swift and sharp.
