five friday finds: baby data, chai cups, asian century?

babies may be the real MVPs of teaching machines

This week was slightly more significant than others. Wrapped up at a place I’ve been at for 13 yrs and started my own little thing. I also delivered a guest lecture at one of Singapore’s premier institutions to a class of Masters’ students - it was titled ‘spherical leadership’. If that piques your curiosity - shoot me a note and I’ll turn it into a post. Amidst this whirlwind of a week, these finds caught my eye:

  1. BABY DATA Most machine-learning models rely on mountains of data to replicate human text, but new research suggests the recipe for learning language might be simpler - BABIES!
  2. CHAI HYGIENE An innovative washing machine is bringing glass cups—and hygiene—back to India's tea stalls.
  3. ASTROSAVORING You don’t have to go to outer space to appreciate the good parts of your life on earth.
  4. ASIAN CENTURY? Analysts and pundits have often pointed to the rise of Asia portending the shift of power. Why are the brightest and wealthiest so eager to leave these supposedly ascendant countries?
  5. DAVID MAKES Goliath takes? A new study suggests startups are actually responsible for much more innovation than established firms. But Big Tech can just buy it up.

No longer dealing with time poverty, we’re going to find new ways of delivering value to you through this newsletter. Other than the regular Friday features, we’ll have regular book recommendations, deeper essays on culture with a series called ‘On ____”. Let us know what else you’d like to hear about? What are you not seeing out there that you wish existed?
