five friday finds: astro-turf, future-phone, ice-farms

The AI-powered surveillance fever dream is coming for you

Hello folks,

Sick kiddo = all usual rhythms paused. Will be back with regularly scheduled art and musings next week.

Here are the finds of the week:

  1. ASTRO-TURF We’ve seen a big resurgence of alternate religions, mysticism and astrology around the globally. This is directly correlated with how uncertain each of our individual universes feel. A lot of people don’t feel like the things they took for granted a decade ago are true today. Pakistanis are no strangers to this feeling of uncertainty. Astrologers on YouTube are on the rise in the country.
  2. SURVEILLANCE DYSTOPIA Rejoice fellow-tech-prisoner!! Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, the fifth-richest person in the world, pitching his exciting vision for an always-on, 1984-style, AI-powered surveillance fever dream to an audience of investors.
  3. CONCORDE STORY This is so fascinating. Singapore Airlines once operated a Concorde between the SIN and LHR, but politics and economics meant it didn't last.
  4. FUTURE-PHONE Tech giants are putting the pieces in place for advancements in artificial intelligence that will push the smartphone into its next era — and soon. Within the next few years, experts say, our phones will be much more intuitive, helpful and even friendly. That shift would not only make phones feel fresh and interesting in ways they haven't been for years but could also liberate us from being immersed in our screens.
  5. ICE FARM With short summers, a cold climate, and a landscape of lava fields and glaciers, Iceland's not the first place you'd think of for farming. But pioneering entrepreneurs are growing some surprising crops and doing it sustainably. Enter vertical farming.
